The original version of Alyosha Ryabinov’s composition, Daughter of Jerusalem, a sonata performed in three movements, was recorded in 1992 on cassette tape. We are pleased to present to you this new CD release of Daughter of Jerusalem, performed and recorded by Ryabinov in 2021. All movements of the sonata take on a fresh and exciting character, expressing the heart of God and His love for Israel. Sonata No. 2, “Daughter of Jerusalem” is based on the theme from the book of the prophet Ezekiel, Chapter 16. In this chapter, the God of Israel is illustrated as a husband and the daughter of Jerusalem symbolizes Israel. The Lord said to her, “And when I passed by you and saw you struggling in your own blood, I said to you in your blood, Live!” (Ezekiel 16:6.) Then the Lord picked her up, cleansed her, and adorned her with beautiful garment and jewels. She had become his bride, but soon she began to trust in her own beauty and she played the harlot. For this reason, she was delivered to those that hated her. The Lord said that her shame would be exposed to all of her lovers. The first movement of the sonata, entitled “Daughter of Jerusalem” expresses this story. The second movement, “Repentance and Mercy,” is about repentance “Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed” (Ezekiel 16:61) and about mercy and restoration “And I will establish My covenant with you. Then you shall know that I am the Lord” (Ezekiel 16:62.) The third movement entitled “The Wedding” is full of joy and celebration. “ ‘Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst,’ says the Lord” (Zechariah 2:10.) It is Ryabinov’s wish that you will experience this amazing biblical love story between the God of Israel and His beloved Israel as you listen to this new recording of Daughter of Jerusalem. Enjoy!
